June 1, 2012
Dear Staff at North Fraser Pretrial Centre;
Thanks for allowing us to view your facility and meet with your staff. I was very impressed with the level of professionalism as well as the individual presentations that were given to the students. I am often hopeful that a glimpse inside the real world of law, criminology and psychology will help bring new interest and light a fire for students to think about themselves and their future. This field trip directly touched upon the psychological aspects of incarceration. It is always interesting to hear about how reintegration and programming can help support change in our “high risk” members of society. I was surprised to hear about the number of mentally ill that are incarcerated. This must be a daunting task for Correctional Officers as many inmates may not seek change or avoid therapy and medications in general. It was nice to hear from the experts in Mental Health rehabilitation and supports. We often explore fields in Psychology but fail to see connections in a real life setting.
The information about recruitment was also very time worthy as students embark on planning for their future careers. Often times, I don’t think student understand that the decisions they make today will greatly impact their future. This was an excellent example that rings loud and clear. I loved the comment about how “past behavior is predictive of future behavior.” I think this is something we all need to hear as we progress through life and wonder about how to make change in our own lives. Perhaps this experience will be remembered and kids will take one teachable moment with them.
Thanks again! I think we all thoroughly enjoyed the visit. PS. Now that we have seen the lunch menu, I am glad that we didn’t stay for lunch. Maybe next time.
