June 1st- Thank you note to North Fraser Pretrial Centure
What an amazing field trip. I was thoroughly impressed with how professional and informative the staff at North Fraser Pretrial Centre. I think we all took something away that day. A kind offering of their time and expertise. You can write a short entry about your experience if you wish!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We had 20 minutes to consult with each other about the Facebook Mind Map. This was to be added to the journal portion of your work.
Mrs. Welton explained this assignment and wrote down names of people and groups for consultation. To recap
1. read your part
2. write down a couple of things that were meaningful
3. share with your friends and add to your mind map.
If you are not sure..... please ask asap as this is part of your final journal mark.

Dear Parents
cc students.
I have consulted with all students during last class and they are aware of any missing assignments. If you have any questions, please contact me, kwelton@sd42.ca
I was very proud of all the students who attended the field trip last week to the Pretrial Centre. I was informed that they were one of the best groups who have visited the facility. There were 5 staff who spent two hours explaining all facets of the facility. We heard from psych experts about mental health and programming and reintegration as well as careers in this field.
As the year draws to a close I wanted to let you know that there are quite a few students who really took a keen interest in the curriculum and maintainted a positive attitude throughout the year. Some of the projects and journals were outstanding, informative and reflective of their learning. I only hope that those who expressed an interest will continue to pursue learning in the field of Social Sciences. Good luck to all in their future endeavors.. Hope to meet you/see at Grad.
KS and DM- See you next year :)

Section 18-1- Social Psychology - Interpersonal Attraction
Social Psychology is the study of how thoughts, feeling and perceptions and behaviours are influenced by others. A subfield of social psychology is social cognition. This is how we perceive, store and retrieve information about social interactions.
Social Psychologists as WHY questions!
Journal entry in class
1. We do we choose the friends we have?
2. What are the important qualities we look for in a friend?
During infancy we depend on others for basic needs (ie attachment, bonding, food and care etc). Later in life we still seek out connections with others even though our basic human needs are met. We are social creatures that have new powers to decide who we associate with and who we allow into our lives. Lets evaluate what psychological or social/emotional need this meets.
Read for your interest the article below- The Value of Friendships
Check out the link to an old study by Stanley Schacter (1959). "Social psychologists are interested in discovering what circumstances intensify our desire for human contact. It seems that we need company most when we are afraid or anxious, and we also need company when we are unsure of ourselves and want to compare our feelings with others (text pg 520).
